The Surrey ladies golf team triumphed for the second consecutive year in the South Region County Match Week played at Hendon Golf Club, Middlesex last week. The team played foursomes and singles matches over four days against teams from Middlesex, Sussex, Hampshire and Kent. With the weather set fair, it proved to be an exciting, competitive week with Surrey coming out on top.
Surrey’s team was made up of Jess Adams (Burhill), Tana Churchill (Cuddington), Lauren Gooding (Roehampton), Charlotte Griffith (Walton Heath), Ella Hammond-Baverstock (Wentworth), Olivia Horsford (Wimbledon Park), Martha Lewis (St George’s Hill), Canice Screene (Croham Hurst), Issy Simpson (Roehampton), Nicola Taylor (Walton Heath) and Lottie Woad (Farnham). Lottie, Olivia, Ella and Issy were all newcomers to the team and made a great contribution. There was a stand-out performance from Olivia Horsford who won four foursomes matches with Lottie Woad and two singles matches.
The team got off to a good start on the Monday defending their title by winning the first day 6 1/2 matches to 2 1/2 against Sussex. The following day they proved too strong for Middlesex winning by the same margin. Day 3 proved a tighter affair against Kent but they came through some exciting matches to win 5 ½ to 3 ½. The final match day against Hampshire proved to be equally close but with true grit and determination, Surrey came through to win 6 - 3 therefore retaining the South Region Champions Trophy. The team will now go through to represent the region at County Finals in September at Delamere Heath Golf Club. A fantastic result and congratulations to them all.
