94th Roehampton Gold Cup

Saturday April 1st 2023

Roehampton Club in south-west London was proud to welcome players to this prestigious curtain raiser for the women’s golf season. Not only proud but extremely relieved that, after days and days of rain, the course was playable and just about the only golf course open on April 1st in the south of England. It was very chilly but dry and players and spectators alike were happy to settle for this.

After a half hour delay to allow preparations to be completed on the very damp ground, forty-five players took to the course. Needless to say Winter Rules were in force and thus, what would otherwise have been a course record, could not be. Ana Dawson, a professional from Peel on the Isle of Man playing Roehampton for the first time, put together two magnificent rounds of 67 for a total 134. Ana, aged 22, turned pro in January this year, flew back from Spain to play at Roehampton having never seen the course before. As she said, first time lucky. Based in the Isle of Man, travel to all golfing events is a lottery, but she is looking forward to her first year on the tour. She comes from a golfing family and has a younger sister with tour ambitions of her own. Ana came in nine shots ahead of second placed Lauren Horsford (Horton Park) on 143 (73,70) on count-back from Annabel Dimmock (Wentworth) also 143 (70,73).

Amateur honours were taken for the second year by young Matilde Santilli from Foxhills on 147 (68,69). In second place was Alice Barlow from Bury St. Edmunds Golf Club, on 149 (74,75) who went on the next day to win the Hampshire Rose and thus the Gold Rose Trophy – combined results of the Roehampton and North Hants events. The trophy for the Gold Rose presented by Justin Rose.

Roehampton Club is most grateful to Russell-Cooke for sponsoring the event for the 18th time.
