BGL and Nedbank partner for mammoth used golf equipment charity drive

The annual Nedbank South African Charity Golf Day, with the support of BGL, is taking place once again at the resplendent Burhill Golf Club in Surrey, on Friday 9th September.

Over the 28 years in which the charity day has taken place, more than £3.5 million has been donated to charities across South Africa to help improve the lives of children through the means of education, health, housing, and sporting facilities – in addition to providing support to those suffering with disabilities.

This year will see the Nedbank South African Charity and BGL take on a fantastic new initiative, perhaps their largest to date, to help grow the game, as well as supporting those who otherwise may not have access to sporting equipment in South Africa.

Colin Mayes, Chief Executive at BGL, commented: “This has always been a special day for us, and this year will be no different. We believe that this initiative is one of the best we’ve seen over the years, helping to give children in South Africa the opportunity to play the game that so many of us have been privileged enough to be a part of for many years. Geoff Johnson, Founder and Chairman: South Africans in Need Trust (S.A.I.N.T.), and his team have always shown a strong commitment to charities in South Africa, and we are proud to be a part of this continued journey.”

In the build-up to the day, Burhill Golf Club will be gathering golf clubs, golf bags, golf shoes, and any other golfing equipment that is still deemed in usable condition to then be shipped to South Africa in a 40-foot container – giving hundreds of children the chance to properly experience what the sport has to offer. Anyone interested in supporting this incredible cause should ensure that all donations are delivered to the Professional Shop at Burhill Golf Club before or during the day of 9th September.

The day itself - which has grown to be one of the largest in Europe, with around 320-360 golfers participating from all over the country and further afield – will be followed by an entertainment-filled gala dinner to further support the South African charities involved.

“Through our fundraising efforts from our annual golf day, we continually strive to help nurture holistic childhood development and actively contribute to vulnerable communities in South Africa,” added Johnson. “This donation process is going to be life-changing for so many children and we are so grateful to everyone who is supporting this cause, and for the continued support of BGL. Sport brings solace to many of us, and we just hope to provide a small part of that to struggling communities across South Africa.”

Other sporting equipment (such as cricket bats, tennis rackets, hockey sticks, boxing gloves, and footballs) will also be collected in aid of emphasising the importance of sport to those in struggling South African communities.
