Pyrford Lakes Golf Club played host to the Surrey U17 & U18 Championships on Tuesday 8th August. The weather was far from ideal for golf, with heavy rain falling for the majority of the day.
Despite the weather, the scoring was very good. In the morning, Josh Thompson led the way after a brilliant round of 69 (-3), which would prove to be the only sub-70 round of the day. Close behind him was Monty Holcombe (-2), and Joshua Davies & James Bould (-1). With 13 players within 5 shots of the lead after round 1, it was all to play for in round 2.
Out in the first group of the afternoon, Leo Vorobyev was the early clubhouse leader, after shooting a second round 71 to go with his morning 74, to finish with a total of 145 (+1). A few groups later, Josh Davies posted a second round 70 to go with his 71 from the morning. This gave Josh a total score of 141 (-3), and this looked like it was going to be tough to beat.
Josh Thompson was 1 over for his second round coming up the last, needing a birdie to tie Josh Davies’ total score of -3. Josh hit his second shot on the par-5 18th to 35 feet, however he was only able to make a par from this position, meaning he finished with a total of 142 (-2), one short of Josh Davies.
It became apparent that the only other person left out on the course who could catch Josh was Monty Holcombe, who stood on the 16th tee level par for the tournament, meaning that three birdies were required to force a playoff. Monty played the last three holes well but only managed three pars, meaning that he finished with a 36-hole total of 144 (level par).
This meant that Josh Davies was crowned Surrey U18 Champion 2023! If that wasn’t enough, Josh also won the U17 category, meaning that he took home both the Millard Quaich and the Mac Trophy!

2nd - Josh Thompson (Wentworth) - 142 (-2)
3rd - Monty Holcombe (Walton Heath) - 144 (level)
U18 - The Millard Quaich
