50 players teed it up at West Surrey Golf Club on Thursday 27th July for the fifth County Card Meeting of the season. The format was an individual yellow tee stableford, with prizes for the top six stableford scores, as well as two nearest the pin prizes for the 5th and 12th holes.
The first groups teed off at 09:00, with Bill Quain starting on the 1st tee and assistant county secretary Caroline Hardy-Evans doing the starting on the 7th tee.
Scoring proved to be difficult, with many players commenting that they had really struggled on the greens. At the halfway stage, 34 points was leading the way, and it remained to be seen whether this would be good enough to secure the trophy.
As the final groups started to come in, there were two scores of 37 points returned, firstly from Charlie Mills of Coombe Hill, and then by Raj Sharma of Foxhills. It would come down to a back nine count back for the title, and Raj’s brilliant 21 points on the back nine would prove enough for him to lift the trophy. Once all the scorecards had been returned, the final scores were as follows:
Results
1st Place - Raj Sharma (Foxhills) – 37 points (on count back)
2nd Place - Charlie Mills (Coombe Hill) – 37 points
3rd Place - David Thoroughgood (Kingswood) – 36 points
4th Place - Douglas Kelly (Tandridge) – 36 points
5th Place - Peter Moller (Coombe Hill) – 36 points
