In the latter part of the nineteenth century the great golf boom spread across the county, and from then until the 1920’s three quarters of the English clubs existing today were formed. Surrey was no exception and the immense variety offered by its heaths, downlands, commons, and parklands provided the perfect sites for the game. By 1923 there were over 50 clubs in the county, with Surrey now boasting over 100 and we are proud to see that 14 of these courses appear in the top 100 golf courses in GB & I and 3 in the World top 100.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOU?
Hopefully, all affiliated members of Surrey County Golf Ltd have been made aware by their Club that this is the Centenary Year as all Clubs have been sent posters and emails regarding the events below.
Surrey Golf has planned a programme of events, in the fervent hope that all affiliated members have an opportunity to participate in the Celebrations. For all the events listed below there will be prizes and no cost to participants.
KEY EVENTS
All clubs have been asked to nominate a Stableford competition with the winners in the following 3 handicap index categories 0-11, 12-28 and juniors (please note that juniors may only qualify in their respective event) being invited to play in a qualifying semi-final on a regional basis with the successful semi-finalists advancing to the Centenary Final.
The Stableford event at the clubs must be no later than the middle of June. The successful players will be contacted regarding the semi-final.
Each club is invited to enter their Captain and Professional into the Centenary Challenge - once again based on a regional qualifier and Grand Final.
The highlight of the year will be the CENTENARY PRO-AM. Scheduled for Monday 25th September at Burhill Golf Club and featuring a host of talented Professional golfers - all of whom will have played for the Surrey 1st team or have a key association with Surrey Golf.
PARTICIPATION IS OPEN TO EVERY AFFILIATED SURREY COUNTY GOLF MEMBER, GIVING EVERYONE A CHANCE TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS UNIQUE EVENT. THE COST OF WHICH WILL BE BOURNE BY THE COUNTY.
WE HAVE REQUESTED THAT CLUBS BALLOT ALL INTERESTED MEMBERS TO DETERMINE THEIR REPRESENTATIVE (POSSIBLY MORE THAN 1 SUBJECT TO OVERALL NUMBERS) WITH THE INTENTION THAT NO ONE IS SELECTED ON ABILITY or OFFICE
The celebrations will finish with a black-tie gala dinner to be held on Friday 6th October at Wentworth. Full details will be provided to clubs shortly.
